Effects of Communication on Stress of Long Term Hemodialysis Patients

Abstract
This Quasi-experimental study attempted to analyze the effect of communication on stress of LTHD patients.
The purpose of this study was to determine the fact that communication between nurse and LTHD patients relieves the stress.
The subjects consisted of 16 LTHD patients were conveniently sampled from Oct. 2nd to Oct. 16th, 1989 at W. hospital in Iri city.
Under the theoretical framework of King¢¥s Theory of Goal-Attainment, two hypotheses were tested to analyze the effect of communication between nurse and patient.
Psychological stress of the LTHD patients was measured by the tool that Park (1989) invented. The tool was 4-pointed Likert scale and consisted of 38 items.
Two non-parametric statistics-Wilcoxon matched-pair signed-ranks test and Speraman¢¥s rho-were used to analyze the obtained data.
The results were as follows:
1. The significant difference of the LTHD patients¢¥ stress after communication was accepted (T=4, p < .05).
2. There is no: relationship between psychological stress and period of hemodalysis.
